DEB's Audiology & Hearing Care

What to Expect?

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Visiting a hearing clinic for the first time can feel uncertain — especially if you’ve had a rushed or confusing experience before.

At DEB’s Audiology, your first visit is designed to be unhurried, clear, and reassuring. You’ll be guided personally by an RCI-certified audiologist, not sales staff, so you can understand your hearing properly and decide your next steps with confidence.

Before Your Appointment

There’s very little you need to prepare.

Please bring:

  • Any previous hearing test reports (if available)
  • Your current hearing aids (if you use them)
  • A list of medications you take regularly (optional)

If you wear glasses, bring them along — we’ll ensure comfort during testing.

Most importantly, come with your questions.
We encourage family members or caregivers to attend if that helps you feel more comfortable.

There is no pressure to buy anything, and no decisions are expected on the same day

Your appointment will be conducted entirely by an RCI-certified audiologist, who will remain your point of contact throughout your care.

Your Hearing Assessment: Step by Step

Your first visit typically lasts 60–90 minutes.
This allows us to understand your hearing properly — not just quickly.

1. Understanding Your Concerns

We begin by listening.

You’ll be asked about:

  • When you first noticed hearing difficulty
  • Situations where hearing is hardest (conversations, phone calls, TV, restaurants)
  • Any ringing in the ears, dizziness, or balance issues
  • Medical history and lifestyle factors

This conversation often reveals important clues that short hearing tests miss.

We gently examine your ear canal and eardrum to check for:

  • Earwax buildup
  • Infections or inflammation
  • Structural issues

Sometimes hearing difficulty is caused or worsened by treatable conditions — and addressing these first can significantly improve hearing.

This is the part most people are familiar with.

You’ll listen to soft sounds through headphones, and we measure:

  • Which sounds you hear well
  • Which sounds you miss
  • The degree and pattern of hearing loss (if present)

This helps us understand what sounds you’re missing — but not yet how it affects real life.

Many people say:

“I can hear sounds, but I can’t understand people.”

To understand this, we test how well you hear speech, not just tones — including in background noise.

This step is crucial, because:

  • Daily life happens in noise, not silence
  • It guides hearing aid selection and settings
  • It explains why hearing aids may not have worked before

We assess how well your eardrum and middle ear are working.

This helps identify issues such as:

  • Fluid behind the eardrum
  • Pressure problems
  • Middle ear stiffness or damage

Some of these conditions require medical treatment before hearing aids are considered.

Understanding Your Results

You’ll understand:

  • Why you struggle in certain situations
  • Whether hearing aids are likely to help
  • What other options (if any) should be considered

You are never rushed through this discussion.

Once testing is complete, your audiologist will:

  • Show you your hearing results
  • Explain them in simple, everyday language
  • Answer your questions patiently
  • Discuss what your results mean for your daily life

If Hearing Aids Are NOT Recommended

This happens more often than people expect.

You may be advised to:

  • Monitor your hearing
  • Address a medical issue first
  • Return for a review later

We believe reassurance and clarity are just as important as treatment.

If Hearing Aids Are Recommended

If hearing aids are appropriate for you, we will:

  • Explain why they are recommended
  • Discuss which features would actually help you
  • Talk through options at different price points
  • Answer all your questions honestly

Sometimes the right recommendation is a simple solution, sometimes it’s more advanced,
and sometimes it’s not hearing aids at all, yet

There is no obligation to proceed.

What Happens Next?

If you choose to proceed, your care is guided step by step — calmly and thoughtfully.

We’ll help with:

  • Careful fitting and personalised programming
  • Clear, simple instructions for everyday use
  • Follow-up visits to fine-tune comfort and clarity

Your hearing journey is gradual, and you’re supported at every stage.

Don’t let hearing difficulties keep you from the moments that matter most.

Many people leave their first visit feeling relieved, either because their hearing is better than they feared, or because they finally understand what’s been causing the difficulty.

There is no pressure to decide anything immediately. You’re encouraged to take time, involve family, and move forward only when you’re comfortable.

Whatever the outcome, you’ll leave with clarity, honesty, and guidance — not confusion or sales pressure.
